Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through the aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her to make use of the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash inside the house of one on the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
